When your backyard proves to have little use other than letting your dog out to blow off some steam, it is difficult to begin the process of creating an environment that will make you want to go out back. It has been helpful to me to first assess what you want the space to be used for. Form means nothing without function, and that function could be as simple as "enjoyment through viewing". Once that is established (and it can change) then you will list out the different components that will help you achieve that goal.
